Picking A Pediatrician

Right now, both your baby and you are cared for by your OB/GYN. But in a few weeks, your little one will need to have his or her own doctor, called a pediatrician.

This doctor will be a crucial part of your life for the first few years by giving your baby check-ups, necessary vaccinations, holding your hand when your baby has his or her first fever, and giving priceless advice.

Now is the time to start your search for the perfect pediatrician for your little one.

Where To Look?
If you’re not sure where to look for a pediatrician, start by asking those around you. Ask your own doctor, co-workers, family members and friends. Make a list of names and then begin to compile a list of questions to narrow down your choices.

What Are You Looking For?
Just like any doctor, choosing a pediatrician revolves around a lot of important issues. First, you’ll want to make sure the pediatricians on your list are covered by your health insurance and are board certified. Next, you’ll want to consider the finer details, such as office locations and availability. Though large practices (groups with more than one or two covering doctors) have their disadvantages, you may find they have longer office hours, weekend hours and more flexibility if you need an emergency visit.

Once you’ve decided on a doctor, make an appointment to visit the practice. Ask about their experience and views on child rearing. If you have certain beliefs about nutrition and preventive medicine, make sure their views match yours. Finally, if you find you’re not comfortable with this doctor after your interview, listen to your instincts and find another. There’s no need to suffer with a doctor you can’t talk to about your child when there are others that may fit your needs perfectly!
